Woman Wins Lottery Jackpot in Bowie

The woman will take home a $250,000 prize after her win, which her family at first thought was an April Fool's joke.

BOWIE, MD — A very lucky woman in Bowie has just scored a huge jackpot by playing the Maryland Lottery, and she had to convince her family that she wasn't pulling an April Fool's Joke.

The 77-year-old woman, who as not named, won a $250,000 prize with the Maryland Lottery's $10 "$250,000 Jackpot" scratch-off. The winning ticket was purchased at the Giant in Bowie, and it was an impulse buy for the woman, who had $10 in her pocket when she saw the ticket in the Lottery vending machine, according to a statement from the Maryland Lottery.

“I scratched off the ticket and saw the wishbone symbol and knew I had won,” she said.

However, her husband didn't believe she'd won at first, and neither did her son, thinking it was an April Fool's joke, according to the statement. It was until after they scanned it using the Maryland Lottery app that they became convinced.

The woman says she's not going to spend the money right away, but rather "save it for a rainy day."
