Inmate Found Dead in PG County Jail

The man had been at the facility just a few days while he awaited trial on drug and gun charges.

UPPER MARLBORO, MD — An inmate who had been at the Prince George's County Department of Corrections for just a few days died at the facility Wednesday night, and authorities are attributing the death to natural causes.

Medical staff at the detention center "responded to a medical signal and found the detainee unresponsive and without a pulse," according to a statement from the facility.

Emergency personnel repeatedly attempted CPR on the 43-year-old man, who was not identified in the statement. When paramedics arrived, they continued attempts to resuscitate him, but were unable to regain a pulse. The medical examiner has preliminarily ruled the death as due to natural causes, but a full autopsy will be performed in Baltimore.

The man had been held at the Department of Corrections since Aug. 30. He had been housed in a medical unit due to his size, and was awaiting trial on a $750,000 bond on charges of a controlled dangerous substance as well as possession of a firearm, according to the statement.

The Prince George's County Homicide Unit also responded to the scene and is investigating the situation, as they ordinarily do in such cases.
