Man Accused of Pokemon Go Robberies on University of Maryland Campus Arrested

University police say 22-year-old Javon Dominique Walker targeted people playing the popular mobile game on campus.

University of Maryland Police have arrested a man accused of using the popular mobile game Pokemon Go to target people for robberies.

Earlier his month, people playing Pokemon Go on the University of Maryland campus in College Park were robbed of their phones by a band of four robbers who had at least one handgun, according to a Washington Post report.

The University of Maryland Police Department announced this week that it had arrested 22-year-old Javon Dominique Walker of Clinton, Md., in connection with the robberies.

"On July 12, 2016, we received three reports of armed robberies that occurred between 9:08 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.," the statement reads. "One robbery occurred near Tydings Hall and the other two occurred near Queen Anne's Hall. There were four victims all together. None of the victims were injured."

Walker faces four counts each of armed robbery, robbery, assault in the 1st degree, assault in the 2nd degree and theft of less than $1,000.

Police departments nationwide have warned people to be careful playing the game, noting that it makes them a target for robbers and advising people to be aware of their surroundings.
