Man Who Tried To Stab Officer After Prince George's Car Crash Fatally Shot By Cop: Police
A man involved in a car crash fled the scene then tried to stab an officer. Another officer who was off duty at the time fatally shot him.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A man involved in a two-vehicle crash ran from the scene, tried to stab a police officer and then was fatally shot by another officer, according to the Maryland State Police.
Around 5 p.m. Wednesday, MSP troopers were called to the area of U.S. Route 301 (Crain Highway) at Village Drive for a report of a two-vehicle crash. The driver of one of the vehicles involved in the crash ran from the scene. Within an hour, MSP troopers received a report of a shooting in the area of U.S. Route 301 and Trade Zone Avenue, MSP stated.
According to a preliminary investigation, off-duty Metropolitan Police Department Lieutenant Daren Jones was in the area of Route 301 and Trade Zone Avenue in his marked patrol car when he saw Ian Tilton, 28, of Annapolis in the road. Jones called for assistance and a Prince George’s County police officer arrived on scene, the MSP reported.

Tilton pulled out a knife and lunged at the Prince George’s County police officer who attempted to deploy his stun gun, which didn't work. Jones then fired his gun and hit Tilton. Officers performed first aid on Tilton who was taken by ambulance to the University of Maryland Capital Regional Hospital in Largo where he was later pronounced dead, according to the MPS.
Investigators believe these two incidents are connected.
