New Speed Camera Zones To Issue Tickets In Bowie Neighborhoods Starting Dec. 1
The Safe Speed Camera Program rolled out 21 new sites Nov. 1. The 30-day warning period is almost up and tickets will be issued Dec. 1.
BOWIE, MD — Earlier this month, Bowie expanded its Safe Speed Camera Program to include school zones and residential zones. Speed cameras operate seven days a week, 24 hours a day, including in the 21 new locations; however, the 30-day warning period for the new spots is almost up.
"The goal is to reduce speeding violations while decreasing the potential for accidents in city limits. Over time, the intent of the program is to change driving behavior; not generate revenue for the city of Bowie," Bowie Police Department Acting Chief Dwayne A. Preston said in a statement.
During the 30-day adjustment period, drivers exceeding the speed limit by 12 miles per hour received a warning rather than a citation. But starting Dec. 1, citations will be issued to the registered owner of any vehicles recorded traveling at least 12 miles per hour over the speed limit. The maximum fine for each violation is $40.
