UPPER MARLBORO, MD — A Baltimore man walking on Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro was hit by an SUV and died Saturday night, Maryland State Police say. The accident is the second fatal pedestrian accident in a week on Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro. Troopers say that 20-year-old Jewell Reid was walking in the fast lane of northbound Maryland Route 301 (Crain Highway) south of Maryland Route 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue) about 11:15 p.m. when he was struck by a Chevy Tahoe driven by an Upper Marlboro woman.

It is unclear if Reid was attempting to cross Crain Highway at the time of the collision or was walking parallel with the roadway, police said. Alcohol is not considered to be a factor in Saturday's accident.

On May 19, Adrian Harris, 26, of Waldorf, was walking southbound in the left travel lane of Crain Highway near Rosaryville Road in Upper Marlboro with his back to traffic when he was struck and killed. Alcohol was not a factor in that collision; both accidents happened at night.

State police remind pedestrians to be safe by wearing clothing or other accessories that are brightly colored or reflective, especially when walking or running along roadways during hours of darkness and follow all traffic laws. This includes using crosswalks when available, facing the direction of traffic when walking or running, and obeying pedestrian crossing signals.

Drivers should always be on the lookout and look for pedestrians and bicyclists along the road, police say.
