PG County Mother Pleads Guilty to Killing Her 2 Kids: Report

Authorities want to close a loophole that allowed Sonya Spoon to be released after threatening her children.

UPPER MARLBORO — A Cheverly mother reportedly has pleaded guilty to suffocating her children back in 2014, and authorities say it could have been prevented if it weren't for a loophole in Maryland law.

Sonya Spoon entered a guilty plea for the second-degree murder of her 3-year-old daughter Kayla and 1-year-old son Ayden on Sept. 5, 2014, according to a WTOP report.

Spoon had been hospitalized two days before the murders for threatening to kill Kayla and commit suicide, but she was soon released. Authorities want to close a loophole that only allows social services to be alerted when the child is harmed rather than simply threatened, WTOP reported.

Spoon was involved in a custody battle with Lester Thompson, the father of Kayla.

The state is seeking 70 years with time suspended for spoon, which would come out to 45 years in prison. The defense can ask for a minimum of 35 years, according to the report.
