UPDATE: Authorities Ask Drivers to Stay Home; Bowie Facilities Closing; Trash Service Canceled

Bowie City Gym and Senior Center closing at noon. Ice Arena closing at 2 p.m. Thursday’s lessons will be made up on March 26. Mansion and Welcome Center open until 4 p.m.

All Prince George’s County-contracted residential trash collection services have been suspended for Thursday, March 5, and will resume on their next regularly scheduled collection day, officials said.

All curbside recycling collection has been suspended for the reminder of the day because of the snowfall and deteriorating road conditions. Curbside recycling collection services missed Thursday may resume on Friday, March 6, weather permitting.

Residents can check the county’s website or contact CountyClick 3-1-1 for up-to-date information on recycling services. In addition, all bulky trash collections have been cancelled for Thursday, March 5.

Prince George’s County has activated its snow emergency plan as the Department of Public Works and Transportation makes roadways “passable” for drivers, and officials are asking residents to stay off the roads.

Forecasters predict the area could receive 4 to 8 inches of snow by evening.

Primary and secondary roads will be cleared first to ensure that public safety and other emergency vehicles can travel. After completion of these roads, residential roads will be plowed.

“Prince George’s County is prepared for another major winter weather event. I want to thank all essential county personnel in advance for their hard work and service during this significant weather event,” said Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III in a statement. “I am asking citizens to stay off the roads as much as possible and to be safe. During times like these, it is important that we look out for neighbors, family, and friends – especially the elderly.”

Bowie Update

The City government is open on Thursday. Trash and recycling will be picked up today as long as conditions permit.

Plowing will begin in the city of Bowie when snow reaches about two inches and will be focused first on major thoroughfares and drives in the neighborhoods, and then will move to the side streets, according to the city website.

Residents are asked to move cars off the streets and into driveways or on the grass, which will give snowplows more room to maneuver.

Property owners are asked to clear snow from sidewalks on their property within 48 hours after the snow stops falling.

County Plowing and Roads

Residents are asked to park on the even-numbered sides of residential streets or in their driveways to help the crews plowing the road.

Final plowing on residential roadways will not occur until after the snow ends.

Residents should shovel their driveways after plowing has occurred and to remove snow/ice from the sidewalks abutting their homes and businesses.

Residents are asked to wait 12 hours after the snowfall has stopped before calling 311 or the Snow Information Center at 301-350-0500.
