On his way to work, Officer Joe Ward, coincidentally a part of Prince George’s County Police Department’s K9 Unit, spotted the little runaway. Rusty was dodging passing cars in the middle of the busy intersection at Martin Luther King Jr Highway and Sheriff Road, nearly being hit by vehicles.
Ward immediately activated his emergency lights, pulled over and was able to grab Rusty. The pooch with nine lives was placed in the back of Ward’s police cruiser with his K9, Loki.

Because Rusty’s smart owner had her information on the dog’s collar, Ward was able to call Hall to let her know Rusty was safe—and was hanging out with the K9 Unit at a training session.
“No, we’re not going to have Rusty train to track the bad guys, but we’re sure he’ll get a treat or two,” the department wrote.
Hall picked up the pup later in the day.
