Prince George's Tops 20,000 Coronavirus Cases, Nears 700 Deaths

Prince George's County now has more than 20,000 cases of coronavirus, the most of any jurisdiction in the state.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Prince George's County now has 20,302 cases of coronavirus, according to the Maryland Department of Health. The county's death toll has reached 696, up 12 from Tuesday.

More than 13.8 million people around the world have been infected by coronavirus. Global deaths from the virus total more than 592,000, according to Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, 3.6 million people have been infected, and more than 138,000 have died from coronavirus.

Prince George's County still has the most confirmed coronavirus cases in the state, according to the latest data from the Maryland Department of Health. Montgomery County has the second most, with a total of 16,153 positive cases. Montgomery County, however, has more coronavirus-related deaths than Prince George's County with 728 deaths as of Friday morning.

More than 76,000 Marylanders have tested positive for coronavirus. The virus has killed 3,227 people in the state.

While Maryland has seen decreased positivity rates and increased testing, the number of new daily cases is trending slightly upward. The state reported 756 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, the largest jump in more than a month.

On Friday, Maryland clocked 707 new cases. This time last week, that number was 463. New daily cases topped out at 1,784 on May 19 and were as low as 260 on June 18.

Coronavirus-related deaths are down, however. Daily deaths peaked at 68 on April 29. The virus killed eight people on Thursday.

The state has not reported more than 20 new deaths since June 20. Daily deaths have hovered between two and 18 since then.

Hospitalizations, which peaked at 1,711 on April 30, are also down. As of Friday morning, 434 Marylanders were hospitalized with the virus.

Anybody with questions about coronavirus or testing should call the health line at (410) 222-7256. The line is staffed on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises doing the following to slow the spread of coronavirus:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If this is not available, use hand sanitizer that is at least 60 percent alcohol.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Keep 6 feet of space between people.
  • Stay home.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

The CDC lists these as symptoms of coronavirus:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
