UMD Student Dies, 5 Others Sick Due To Illness Outbreak: Report
An outbreak of an illness associated with Adenovirus has prompted a statement from the university.

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- A University of Maryland student reportedly has died and five others are sick after an outbreak of a disease associated with Adenovirus.
In a statement shared on social media, UMD University Health Center Director David McBride said that he was "sad to share" that a University of Maryland student had died from an illness associated with Adenovirus.
"While we are normally prohibited from sharing medical information publicly, we have been authorized by a family members to share this news and urge others to take seriously this strain of a common virus," McBride wrote.

Adenoviruses are usually relatively harmless and cause nothing more than colds, but there are some more dangerous strains that can result in serious illness.
The university learned of this case on Nov. 1 and were closely monitoring for more cases along with the Maryland Department of Health and Prince George's County Health Department, McBride added.

"Since then, there have been reports of five additional cases of students with confirmed Adenovirus associated illness," he said. "On November 19, we learned that the test of one specimen sent to the CDC revealed Adenovirus 7, a strain that may cause more severe illness."
