West Nile Virus Found In Bowie Mosquitoes
State health officials say this is the first confirmed case of the virus this summer; Bowie officials have sprayed the area.

Mosquitos collected in Bowie last week carried the West Nile virus, which attacks the nervous system, officials said.
The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene confirmed the virus on Aug. 5 in mosquitos in Bowie, the city says. Spraying to control mosquitoes happened the following night.
West Nile Virus is transmitted by mosquito bits and affects the nervous system.

- Headache
- Body Aches
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Swollen Lymph Glands
- Rash
Residents can report an area where mosquitoes are prevalent for spraying, by calling the City of Bowie Public Works Department at 301-809-2336.
How to Avoid Mosquito Bites
- Stay indoors at dusk and at dawn when mosquitoes are most active
- Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes when outdoors
- Wear insect repellents according to product labels
- Install, inspect, and repair window and door screens in homes and stables
- Regularly clean bird baths and bowls for pet food and water
- Remove or empty all water-holding containers
