Celebrate Women Veterans Week March 21-25 In Prince George's County

Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks has declared March 21-25 as Women Veterans Week.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — March 21-25 has been proclaimed as Women Veterans Week, a first in Prince George’s County. Angela Alsobrooks, county executive, was joined by local women veterans for the announcement Tuesday as she highlighted the county’s efforts to provide services and resources to veterans and their families.

“This recognition of our women veterans has been long overdue,” Alsobrooks said. “Women have been significant contributors to our nation’s national security for a long time and now represent the fastest growing population in both military service and the veteran community. Women’s History Month is about honoring the achievements of women and promoting the many contributions women have made to strengthen our county and nation, so we are setting aside this week to celebrate our women veterans and lift them up.”

Prince George’s County is home to approximately 60,000 veterans, the largest population of veterans in the state. Under the Alsobrooks Administration in 2019, Prince George’s County became the first county in Maryland to open an Office of Veterans Affairs. The Prince George’s County Office of Veterans Affairs, housed within the county’s department of family services, serves as a one-stop resource center dedicated to serving veterans and their family members. The office works to create programs dedicated to serving the needs of veterans in collaboration with government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and businesses.

In 2020, the Office of Veterans Affairs opened the Military Women Veterans Center and established a Military Women Veterans Advisory Committee to specifically address the needs of women veterans and their families. In collaboration with the Prince George’s County Commission for Veterans and the Office of Veterans Affairs, the Military Women Veterans Center works to provide resources and services to women veterans in the county, including support for active-duty members, reservists and members of the National Guard residing in Prince George’s County.

County Executive Alsobrooks also announced that the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System will welcome two major touring exhibits that showcase stories of military service of veterans during the next several weeks. In collaboration with the Military Women’s Memorial, PGCMLS will host the “Color of Freedom: Honoring the Diversity of America's Servicewomen” at select library branches beginning in mid-April. This exhibit was created to shed light on the sacrifices and contributions of minority women who served in or alongside the military throughout history. The second exhibit, “In Freedom’s Name,” honors the military service of Marylanders throughout U.S. history and will be on display at select branches through July.
