A Model of Performance and Success

The Catonsville Tree Canopy Project started by developing a Model for a cost efficient method of planting and maintaining trees.  The Model continues to insure that, not only are the right trees planted in the right place, but that the trees are watered and maintained.  Success is measured by a tree survival rate of over 98%.

With A Strong Financial Backing

The Canopy Project is sponsored by The Rotary Club of Catonsville and is funded through the Catonsville Community Foundation, the 501c3 charitable arm of the Catonsville Chamber of Commerce.  The “Trees for Catonsville Fund” maintained by the Foundation attracts donations from businesses and individuals and grants from major corporations and foundations.

With the Support of neighborhood volunteers

Every tree is planted by a neighborhood or school volunteer as young as 8 years old.  50 street trees are in the ground in less than 2 hours with plenty of time to learn about the benefits of trees and time out for snacks.  When the neighborhood or school plants the tree, they take ownership of the tree and make sure that the trees are watered through the summer.

For the benefit of Community and Future Generations

The trees that were planted last year next to the ball field have already grown 2 feet taller.  Not tall enough yet, to provide a shady place to sit, but we watch them grow with anticipation, just as we watch our own children grow.  The shade is for them, to sit and watch their kids, our grandchildren.
