CDC Africa Team Lead Dr. Allen Craig to Speak October 15 at Charlestown

Topic: "The End of Polio -- Challenges Getting Across the Finish Line"

Dr. Allen S. Craig, MD, the Africa Team Lead for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will speak Wednesday, October 15, at Charlestown retirement community. His topic will be “The End of Polio – Challenges Getting Across the Finish Line.” His talk will begin at 12:45 p.m. in the Conference Center at Charlestown, 715 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, MD.

Dr. Craig’s talk is part of a day-long Sandler Training Polio Fundraiser co-sponsored by Rotary International District 7620. Seating limited. Call 410-493-8467 for more information.

Dr. Craig heads the Polio Eradication Branch, Global Immunization Division, of the CDC. He completed his undergraduate degree at the State University of New York at Geneseo in 1978 and his medical education at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1982.

After completing his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Washington he worked as a medical officer at the Shiprock Indian Health Service Hospital in New Mexico from 1985 to 1995. He completed the CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer training from 1995 to 1997 at the Tennessee Department of Health.

He was appointed Deputy State Epidemiologist of the Tennessee Department of Health in 1997 and State Epidemiologist in 2001. From 2008 to 2012 he served as the CDC Resident Advisor to Zambia for the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative. In early 2013, he joined the CDC’s Global Immunization Division as the Africa Team Lead where he is responsible for polio response in Africa.
