Charlestown's John Fahey is Honored for his Naval Airship Flights in Wartime

CATONSVILLE, MD (June 28, 2016) – Charlestown retirement community resident John Fahey (U.S. Navy Commander, retired) is the recipient of the Naval Airship Association's 2016 Presidential Service Award given in recognition of his past service to the association and to the United States.

Fahey, when he was a U.S. Navy Lieutenant, on June 26, 1950 piloted a Naval airship, taking off from the USS Midway aircraft carrier during a demonstration for the Chief of Naval Operations and the Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Mid-Atlantic Fleet.

Fahey’s successful 8-hour ZP2K-80 flight provided important information about aircraft that would be used in the Korean War, which had just begun at the time.

Fahey piloted 209 flights for 1,778.9 hours during his Naval career, which included service in World War II and the Korean War.
