Memorial Day's Real Meaning

D-Day Veteran Always Remembered

CATONSVILLE, MD -- This photo shows the late U.S. Navy veteran Harper Griswold welcoming troops home at BWI-Thurgood Marshall Airport.

I was honored to be a friend of Harper, who at age 19 took part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy.

Harper often spoke to me about the horrors of war and of his lifelong "survivor guilt" stemming from D-Day.

"Why did God let me live," he once said as he cried on a Memorial Day, "when so many died that day?"

May we never forget the ultimate sacrifices made by our veterans to protect and preserve our freedom.
