CHARLESTOWN’S “BELIEVE IT OR NOT” BASEBALL CONNECTIONS:
Charlestown residents like to say their community is located just a long fly ball away from Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
A resident softball team, The Sluggers, play throughout the summer on a baseball field in front of Our Lady of the Angles Chapel on Charlestown’s 110-acre campus. They are fond of playing “little ball,” bunting their way on base and manufacturing runs -- just as the Baltimore Orioles of the late 1800s did when Wee Willie Keeler “hit ‘em where they ain’t.”
Resident Carl Tongier is the nephew of the late Walter Johnson, a Washington Senators Hall of Famer who won more than 400 games in his career
Resident Al Blackburn is the winner of Charlestown’s “Cal Ripken Look-a-Like” contest.
Resident Florence Woelfel’s stuffed Oriole Bird mascot gives game-day score updates from outside her apartment.
A Civil War-era baseball game played two weeks ago on the Charlestown field celebrated the Baltimore Orioles and the 200th anniversary of Francis Scott Key’s writing of the poem that became our National Anthem.
