Drunk-Driving Checkpoint Planned for Cinco de Mayo

The College Park barrack of Maryland State Police plans to stop drivers on Thursday, May 5, in Prince George's County.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — A drunk-driving checkpoint will operate on Thursday, May 5, in Prince George’s County, says the Maryland State Police College Park Barrack. Authorities say the checkpoint is a tool to reduce impaired driving collisions by educating, aggressively enforcing and arresting violators for impaired driving, and making the roadway safer in Prince George’s County.

No location for the checkpoint has been released.

The penalties for a DUI or DWI in Maryland consist of potential jail time, fines, and a minimum of a 6-month license suspension.

Reminders for Drivers

State Police reminded drives not to use their cell phones while driving. If you must make a call or text, pull onto the shoulder or exit the road, stop your vehicle and then use your phone.

Additionally, the State of Maryland recently passed the “Move It Over Law.” That means drivers approaching an emergency vehicle or tow truck from the rear must:

If practicable, move into an available lane away from the emergency vehicle or tow truck with due regard for safety and traffic conditions; or

If the driver is unable to safely change lanes, then they must slow to a reasonable and prudent speed that is safe for existing weather, road, and vehicular or pedestrian traffic conditions.
