Howard County Schools No Longer Recycling Cafeteria Food Waste

HCPSS's new waste management vendor will no longer recycle items in plastic bags, film or wrap, so food must be thrown away.

COLUMBIA, MD — Howard County schools will no longer recycle its food waste, but instead must throw it away in garbage cans. Howard County Public Schools spokesperson Brian Bassett told WBAL that there are no longer recycling bins in school cafeterias, which was implemented at the start of the school year.

Bassett said the change took place when the contract between the waste management company and Howard County was renewed in June, and the vendor said any items in plastic bags, film or wrap would be considered residue and would have to be placed in the trash, not recycling. Bassett said recycling will continue in other parts of schools, just not in cafeterias.
