Boys Lax Playoffs: No. 1 Seed Sparrows Point Loses to Pikesville

After beating Pikesville previously, the Pointers fall behind early in the 2A-1A North region semifinals and can't recover.

The Sparrows Point boys lacrosse team fell to visiting Pikesville 12-5 on Monday, ending the 2A-1A North region's No. 1 seed hopes of hosting the regional final game.

“I think we were capable of more than that,” said Pointer head coach Jay Bechtel. "It just goes that way sometimes.”

The Pointers won an earlier season match-up with the Panthers on the strength of a last second go-ahead goal.

Unable to stop the Pikesville's strong offensive attack, the Pointers fell behind 7-3 by the end of the first half.

As the third quarter got under way, the Pointers looked like they had some life in them as they scored two quick goals to narrow the margin. But in the fourth quarter the visiting team ran away with the game, scoring five unanswered goals.

After the game coach Bechtel gave credit to his senior goalie Matt Murphy for keeping the team as competitive during the season.

“Without Matt we would probably be a game or two over .500,” said Bechtel. "It takes a lot of gut to do what he does. He will be missed.”
