Boys' LAX: Pointers Beat Owls 11-1

Sparrows Point goalie Matt Murphy comes just short of a shutout.

With their record at 8-2, the Sparrows Point boys lacrosse team refused to look past local rival Dundalk Wednesday, despite the Owls' .500 record. The Pointers held nothing back as they methodically took apart the Owls defense for an 11-1 victory.

“We are going to try to win the rest of our games,” said Pointer head coach Jay Bechtel. "We can only take them one game at a time. Our goal is to win the division.”

The Pointer offensive attack got off early, scoring three goals in the first quarter, then stretching the lead to 6-0 at the half. The Owls averted the shutout when Dan Miller fired a shot from the outside that Pointer goalie Matt Murphy just couldn't handle.

Then the Pointers took back control of the game with five unanswered goals.

“That loss just put us below .500 at 4-5,” said Dundalk head coach Ryan Foley. “We have been coming along fairly well considering we are really just trying to teach a lot of these kids to play lacrosse."

Bechtel credited attackman Dave Jernigan with sparking the team's offensive run. Jernigan scored twice for the Pointers against Dundalk and dug out nine ground balls.

“Jernigan sparks out offense,” Bechtel said. "He can run our set plays or he can isolate.”

Bechtel also gave credit to senior three-year starter Murphy in goal.

“Matt has been solid in net for us for the last three seasons,” said Bechtel.

Murphy added: “The season started off rough with us losing the first game. My defense played really well today, limited the amount of shots I faced. I really wanted the shut-out, but that can't happen all the time.”

Dundalk hosts Chesapeake on Friday while Sparrows Point will travel to Overlea also on Friday.
