Prep Wrestling: Pointers Take Third, Owls Sixth at Dundalk Duals

Friday and Saturday, Dundalk High School hosted the 3rd Annual Dundalk Duals, a nine-team dual meet tournament that featured some outstanding individual and team wrestling.

The host Owls placed sixth in the tournament while Sparrows Point, with six wrestlers taking dual tournament titles, grabbed third place overall.

Patapsco High, struggling with less than a full roster, finished ninth.

Fort Hill, a wrestling powerhouse from western Maryland, won the team competition.

“The Fort Hill, Mount Vernon, Sparrows Point matches were great,” said Dundalk head coach Chad Goodnight, “ Fort Hill has been so close to winning for three years, it was their time to win.”

The most exciting event of the event came Friday night when Sparrows Point heavyweight Drew Clark career victory. Clark is expected to be featured as Fox 45 Athelete of the Week next week.              

Pointers winning their respective weight classes included Teddy Cadd (135), Shane Hammer (140), Nathan Borkowicz (145), Mike Iman  (171)and James Krug (189) as well as Clark.              

“They are really starting to peak at the right time,” said Sparrows Point head coach Mike Whisner. “Mike Iman, 22-1, pulled off the upset of the tournament when he pinned Fort Hill's stud 171-pounder with a headlock in the first period. Mike really stepped up over the weekend. My three seniors – Cody Lewis, Clark, and Iman – are now a combined 65-4.”               

Dundalk’s Blake Mason and Alfred Martinez took 3^rd in their weight classes with 6-2 records.              

The Dundalk Duals represent the mid-point of the season, and both Dundalk and Sparrows Point look to finish strong.               

“We have the Overlea tournament next weekend which will be a great test for our team,” said Whisner. “We also have a re-match with Kenwood Thursday and Baltimore Lutheran on Monday before our big showdown with Dulaney next Thursday. These next two weeks will be a great test for the team.”              

Dundalk wrestles next at Western Tech on Thursday.               

“Most of our guys took a big step forward this weekend,” said Goodnight. “It’s hard to wrestle that many matches in such a short time period and wrestle well consistently.  I’ve got a pretty young team overall, so this type of tournament gets them a lot of good experience.”
