Towson University to Honor Baltimore Humane Society with Charity Basketball Game

Feb. 15 game at the Towson Center will raise funds for the Baltimore Humane Society. Halftime show will include a chance for fans to meet some of the Humane Society's furry friends.

The Baltimore Humane Society (BHS) announced that the Towson University men’s basketball team, coached by Pat Kennedy, will host Colonial Athletic Conference divisional rival, James Madison University, Tuesday night in a regular season charity basketball game.

A portion of the proceeds from the Feb. 15 game will be donated to the BHS in recognition of their mission to protect, save and care for homeless animals. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at the Towson Center.

The BHS seeks to provide a temporary home, safe refuge and care for stray, unwanted and homeless animals as outlined by founder, Elsie Seeger Barton in 1927. BHS works to place each animal that comes to the shelter in a loving, permanent home and has sought to address the issues of humane animal treatment, with an ongoing goal of ending the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals.

By promoting and offering affordable spay/neuter services, BHS attempts to help limit the population of unwanted animals in the Baltimore metropolitan area. The Humane Society also provides a peaceful, final resting place for beloved companion animals through their cemetery, Nicodemus Memorial Park.

In an effort to show their admiration for the BHS, the TU men’s basketball game will include a halftime show, during which BHS volunteers and staff members will bring their furry friends (a number of dogs) onto the court and provide information on how people can adopt, foster, raise money and help the animals that reside at the BHS shelter.

Elizabeth Silber, BHS director of marketing and public relations, will also be in attendance to talk about how students and teachers alike can help these pets find forever homes, and to thank her alma mater Towson University and its 2010-2011 men’s basketball team, for their efforts in support of BHS.

The BHS relies on the generosity of the public, like the students at Towson University, to get behind causes such as animal welfare, and knows the importance of community support for pets at the shelter.
