Center for Applied Technology’s Ashley Koepping Heads to National Competition

Nine local students will travel to Kansas City to compete in the SkillsUSA National Competition.

The Center for Applied Technology (CAT) South in Edgewater will send nine students to the SkillsUSA National Competition in Kansas City June 24-28. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry workers that educate students on workplace skills.

The competition allows students to compete as a team or individually in the specific trade they have been studying. CAT will have students competing in a variety of categories including business procedures and dental and medical assisting.

Patch caught up with Ashley Koepping, a Crofton resident, who graduated from South River this year and will compete in the medical assisting competition.

Edgewater Patch: What will your role be in the competition?
Ashley Koepping: My role will be as a competitor competing in five tests varying from practical to clerical skills. 

Edgewater Patch: With the SkillsUSA competition approaching, what are you most looking forward to?
Koepping: I am mainly looking forward to meeting my competition. I'm a big competitor and to be able to talk to my other competitors and see how I match up to their state really excites me.

Edgewater Patch: How has being involved with SkillsUSA helped prepare you for your future?
Koepping: This experience has helped me in many ways already. My focus on medical assisting has greatly increased, and it has helped me with my job performance as well as my school performance. 

Edgewater Patch: What do you want to do after high school?
Koepping: I will be attending Stevenson University after high school where I will become a registered nurse. After that I plan on becoming a travel nurse.
