Coast Guard Ends Search for Missing Boater

The Silver Spring man couldn't swim and wasn't wearing a life vest when his boat capsized Sunday night, authorities say.

The Coast Guard has called off its search for a Silver Spring man missing after his boat capsized in the vicinity of Kent Island north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, authorities said Monday.’

The 32-year-old’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the Coast Guard said.

But the Capital-Gazette reported the victim is Javier Alejandro Sotelo of Silver Spring.

Sotelo wasn’t wearing a life jacket and could not swim, Maryland Natural Resources Police spokeswoman Candy Thomson said.

Four family members were rescued Sunday night when the boat capsized off Terrapin Beach Park. None of the passengers were wearing life vests; two of them were holding onto a cooler, Thomson said.

In another weekend water accident, a race boat competing in Thunder on the Narrows went off the the course and struck a crowd of spectators, killing a 7-year-old girl, 7. Several people were injured, and three were flown to shock trauma, according to the NRP on Twitter.

The Coast Guard, along crews from Coast Guard Station Annapolis, MNRP, Maryland State Police and the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, searched for Sotelo from roughly 5 p.m. Sunday until 9:30 a.m. Monday. The search encompassed an area of about 90 square miles.

Natural Resources Police and local agencies are still out on the water with divers and crews using side scan sonar equipment.
