Cutting Hair at SRHS for a Worthy Cause

South River High School is hosting a cut-a-thon with Hair Cuttery to raise funds for a student who has Hodgkin's lymphoma.

If you’re in need of a haircut, you may want to wait until May 2 when you can spruce up your look for a worthy cause.

With help from Hair Cuttery, South River High School (SRHS) will host a cut-a-thon to raise funds for a student who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. The event will be held at the school from 5-8 p.m. on May 2.

South River family and consumer sciences teacher Amy Szanyi is organizing the event for a student, who for privacy reasons, asked only to be referred to as "Candice."

Szanyi has never actually met Candice’s family but when she heard about what she was going through, she decided she wanted to help.

“I didn’t know the family, but when [Candice] told me about the testing—she was emotional when she talked about losing her hair,” Szanyi said. “I don’t know how the whole thing actually got started; it just snowballed in the right direction.”

For $10, students, neighbors and anyone who wants to support Candice can get a haircut and all proceeds will go to the family, Szanyi said. Stylists from Hair Cuttery volunteer their time for the cut-a-thon.

Szanyi said the event is not just for people who want to donate their hair to Locks of Love. Anyone who wants a haircut, no matter how long their hair is, can attend the event and help raise money.

“The family has insurance but this is to try and help them with the other expenses of gas and food and travel,” Szanyi said. “And just to help Candice while she is going through treatment.”

If you can’t attend the cut-a-thon, you can pick up a flier from the school, or print the attached PDF and go to any Hair Cuttery in Anne Arundel County the following week and they will donate 20 percent back to the family. The school will also be selling T-shirts during the cut-a-thon.
