Edgewater Books, TD Bank Team Up for Summer Reading

Every child that reads 10 books will get a $10 deposit in a savings account from TD Bank in their name.

Even though it’s not set to open until August, Edgewater Books is already teaming up with TD Bank to get kids reading this summer.

According to Edgewater Books owner Ken Kennedy, the store is paring up with TD Bank to offer a summer reading program complete with rewards.

If kids read 10 books between now and September 30, TD bank will open a saving account in their name and deposit $10. And Kennedy will give the child a $5 gift certificate to Edgewater Books.

Jonathan Brewin, an assistant manager with TD Bank in Edgewater, said the bank has been doing a reading program for 11 years. Brewin said the program is a great way to get kids reading over the summer, as well as a way to teach the importance of saving money.

“It teaches financial literacy and saving money, and then there’s the education piece as well—getting them to read during the summer," Brewin said. "It hits two sweet spots for the bank... It teaches the kids how to save money, what it looks like and how to manage it properly.”

Anyone interested in participating in the summer reading program can pick up a form at the bank, at Edgewater Books, or print one off online. Kids then track the books they read, and take the form to the bank to get their deposit.

Kennedy, the owner of Language Advantage, plans to open Edgewater Books at 951 Central Ave. on Aug. 19. The store will specialize in children’s books.

“The program is a way to encourage the kids to start thinking about the summer and encourage them to read,” Kennedy said. “We don’t need to have a physical location to read books at home."

Kennedy said if kids need some suggestions for books to read, or if there are families that can’t afford books they can contact him for help though the Edgewater Books website.
