Holiday Shopping Extravaganza is Also Media Center Renovation Fundraiser

The Media Center at is in bad shape. The technology is outdated, the space is oddly configured—and for students, it isn't a welcoming place to spend study time or use as a resource.

In fact, Citizens Advisory Board treasurer Ray Leone said that, "it has the same catalog as it had in 1981 when I was at school there." 

For years, the PTSO and the Citizens Advisory Board have been working to change all of that. They host fundraisers and bring in business partners to collaborate on ideas and plans for the necessary improvements.

They now have a floor plan and a budget to get the space to where it needs to be. But it boasts a hefty price tag: about $500,000.

This Saturday, one of their fundraisers will actually turn out to be a fun place to shop for holiday items before the rush begins in earnest the day after Thanksgiving.

They are having a "Shop Til You Drop" extravaganza at the school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 19, sponsored by the Citizen Advisory Board. 

The fundraising angle comes from the space rental that vendors pay to participate, plus door prizes. Proceeds from the event will directly benefit the SRHS Media Center Renovation Project.

They are in a bit of a hurry to raise money. A $50,000 grant from the state of Maryland will come available when the school can match the money dollar-for-dollar. So far they have raised $6,000. They hope the extravaganza brings in another $6,000 to $8,000.

There is no fee to enter and there will be refreshments available if the shopping makes you hungry.
