Honey Hive Now Open in South River Colony

Cakes by Rachael opened the artisan bakery on Tuesday.

Rachael Powers’ smile could hardly be contained on Tuesday as she stood inside her newly open artisan bakery, Honey Hive.

The bakery opened in South River Colony Tuesday morning at the former Kahve location, and Powers’ excitement radiated.

“I am so excited. It’s like a dream come true,” she said.

After Kahve closed on June 9, Powers had one week to open Honey Hive. And while she wouldn’t recommend launching a new business in a week, she said she nearly had every detail already planned.

“Well I have been dreaming about this since I was 12, so I already knew what I wanted,” Powers said.

Even the name, Honey Hive, Powers had already picked out. And with the help of friends and family she was able to open the bakery in one week.

Honey Hive is undoubtedly a family endeavor. Powers opened the bakery with her mom and business partner Faye, and her father and brother in law both work with her at the store.

“Rachael and her mom had a dream to have their own wedding cakes business and it was expanded from there,” said Powers’ dad, Robert. “They want to make this a destination for dessert.”

Honey Hive specializes in cupcakes, cakepops, European desserts and drinks, gelato and ice cream.

For now the bakery is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, though later Friday and Saturday hours are in the works. They will also be hosting a launch party on September 13.

While the opening may have been a whirlwind, for Powers, it was clearly worth all the hard work.

“I’m like super pumped and really happy,” Power said. "I can’t believe it’s reality.”

Honey Hive is located at 155 Mitchells Chance Rd. in Edgewater.
