Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks serves millions of residents and visitors annually through a wide variety of services and programs. Its primary focus is to provide comprehensive recreational programs for residents and safeguard valuable land through the maintenance and management of over 160 parks and natural areas. The department manages specialized recreational facilities, including two swim centers, two golf courses, three ice rinks, a baseball stadium, a softball complex, and programs tailored to diverse needs ranging from school-age childcare to adaptive recreation. It also cares for thousands of acres of land, encompassing community parks, greenways, archaeological sites, environmental and historical preserves, and large regional parks spanning several hundred acres. Its mission is to create opportunities that allow individuals to enjoy life, explore nature, and restore their health and well-being. Recent South River High School graduate Thomas Stefany has been named the Anne Arundel County winner in the 11th annual Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholars competition. The statewide scholarship program is aimed at supporting promising high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in an engineering-related field, according to a release. Stefany received a merit-based scholarship of $10,000 during an awards reception and dinner hosted by Northrop Grumman on June 24. Stefany intends to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech. A committee of Northrop Grumman employees selected the Engineering Scholars winners. To be eligible for the competition, each scholarship applicant had to have a minimum composite SAT score of 1,700 or ACT score of 27, and a minimum GPA of 3.5. The committee also took into consideration work experience, community involvement and extracurricular activities.
