South River High School Sports: Week of Dec. 5

The winter sports season starts this week with basketball, indoor track and wrestling.

The teams have been practicing for a few weeks and now it is time to put those practices, scrimages and skill drills into play. Athletes from are busy every day of the week. Here is a breakdown of the action:

Basketball

The girls varsity team starts the season at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 7) against Annapolis High (away). The girls will be chasing a winning 2010-2011 season (18 wins, 7 losses), which they ended with a regional final loss to North Point. In their last matchup with Annapolis, the Lady Seahawks won, 68-50. On Friday (Dec. 9), the girls will come home to play Southern High at 5 p.m.

The boys varsity team will start their season with three games this week. They start with a 6:30 p.m. game (away) on Monday (Dec. 5) against Patuxent High School. Their first in-county season opener is against Annapolis High (away) at 5 p.m. on Wednesday (Dec. 7). They have lots of room to grow as a team, ending last season with 5 wins, 7 losses. On Friday (Dec. 9), they'll play Southern High at 7 p.m. at home.

Girls JV (19 wins, 1 loss in 2010) will see two home games this week. First, on Wednesday (Dec. 7), Annapolis comes to Seahawk territory at 3:30 p.m. Then on Friday (Dec. 9), Southern visits for a 3:30 p.m. showtime.

Boys JV (8 wins, 12 losses in 2010) will play all away games this week. First an out-of-county game at Patuxent High at 5 p.m. on Monday (Dec. 5). Then 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Dec. 7) against Annapolis and Friday against Southern.

Indoor Track

All of the Seahawk meets this season will be held at the Prince George's County Sports Complex in Landover. On Tuesday (Dec. 6), the Anne Arundel County Public Schools "east vs. west" meet will start at 3:30 p.m.

Swimming

No meets scheduled for this week.

Wrestling

Wrestlers start their season with a busy two-meet week. They'll head to Chesapeake High for a tri (Broadneck-Chesapeake-South River) at 4 p.m. on Tuesday (Dec. 6). Then on Thursday (Dec. 8), they'll host Glen Burnie at 6 p.m. The coed (but all boys) team ended the 2010-2011 season with 20 wins, 10 losses.
