South River Student Wins Anne Arundel Bar Foundation Essay Contest

A South River High School student won first place in the Anne Arundel County Bar Foundation’s annual high school essay contest.
Junior Paige Markley from South River took first place and earned a $500 prize.
This spring, students were invited to write essays addressing a United States Supreme Court case (King v. Maryland) regarding whether it constitutes an unreasonable search and seizure for police to take a DNA sample from a person who has been arrested for, but not yet convicted of, a crime of violence.

More than 50 Anne Arundel high school students submitted essays in this year’s contest, which were judged by a panel of bar association members. The top three finishers were awarded prizes at a special ceremony in the Historic Courtroom of the Circuit Courthouse in Annapolis on June 18.
Second prize went to Mikayla Walker a junior at Severn School, and William Shorter Jr., a sophomore at Glen Burnie High School took third place.
