Southern High Names Maynard Head Basketball Coach

Will Maynard, a Southern alumnus and varsity assistant coach, has been named the new head boys basketball coach. He replaces coach Ray Bowen.

Last Wednesday, Southern High School named Will Maynard its newest boys basketball head coach.

Maynard, who replaces Ray Bowen, becomes only the fourth coach to fill the position since the mid 1960's.

"That tradition is something that I really like," Maynard said. "You can't beat that."

Serving as an assistant to Bowen since the 2004 season and as the head JV basketball coach since 2005, Maynard will enter his fifth year as a student advocate at Southern.

"As far as I was concerned, he was always our first choice," said Southern athletic director Ted Gott. "He came through the program, he knows the tradition we've had here. We're looking forward to it."

Maynard, who graduated from Southern in 1999, was a two-time All-State basketball player and a career 1,000 point scorer for the Bulldogs.

"I want to build upon what coach Bowen did," Maynard said about taking over the program.

Basketball season begins on November 15.

"I'm looking forward to it," he said. "The future's bright."
