The Arc of Howard County Honors Businesses

Inclusive hiring practices and operations cited

Local businesses and business leaders were honored at The Arc of Howard County’s recent Celebration of Excellence. Excellence in Employment awards went to Home Depot Ellicott City, Mobern Lighting, Wegmans Columbia and Zips Dry Cleaners. The four received recognition for their inclusive hiring practices and operations. All have hired people served by The Arc.

Home Depot Ellicott City was cited for its practice of identifying appropriate positions for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and giving them training and the opportunity to grow in their jobs. Mobern Lighting and General Manager Bob Claire were recognized for “creating a culture at hat encourages inclusivity” and for encouraging other businesses to do the same. Wegmans Columbia was praised for seeking applicants of all abilities before its store opened. One of the original hires has been there ever since. Zips Drying Cleaning was honored for its multicultural workforce which includes people with different abilities who are provided the training and support needed to succeed.

Since its inception in 1961, The Arc has become one of Howard County’s largest employers, with more than 300 staff members and hundreds of volunteers working to achieve full community life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It provides a range of residential, work and day services and family support services.
