Two people died after the Patapsco River flooded downtown Ellicott City, where 6.5 inches of rain fell Saturday night and destroyed businesses along Main Street.

This is not the first time in recent history that Main Street merchants have been struck by tragedy. Main Street was closed for nearly a week in 2012 after a CSX train derailed, killing two women who had been sitting on the bridge and sending 21 train cars off the tracks.

In the aftermath of Saturday's flood, Main Street has been closed from Rogers Avenue to the Patapsco River as crews conduct safety assessments. At least four buildings have been destroyed and 20 to 30 have been damaged. Two people died in the flood, and more than 150 people needed to be rescued.

A timeline for reopening Main Street has not yet been established.
