Student Climate Change Institute Accepting Applications

Sophomores with the Howard County Public School System have until Sept. 20 to apply for a spot in the institute.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Tenth graders enrolled with the Howard County Public School System can apply for a spot with the Student Climate Change Institute hosted by the Howard County Conservancy. Only three sophomore students at each HCPSS high school will be chosen to participate and must commit to attending all sessions. Students must complete and submit all portions of the application for their school by Sept. 20.

Sessions will take place online from 5:15-7:15 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, October 27
  • Thursday, November 5
  • Tuesday, November 10
  • Tuesday, November 17
  • Tuesday, December 1
  • Tuesday, December 8

During those six sessions, students will hear from climate experts on such topics as exploring how climate change can impact public health, how environmental policy is made and more. Participants also will work with experts and fellow students to consider solutions to global climate issues and form initiatives in schools and communities against climate change.

The institute is presented in collaboration with Biohabitats, Ready Sense, Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve – MD, Howard County Office of Community Sustainability, University of Maryland Department of Entomology, Maryland League of Conservation Voters, Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the University of Maryland Extension.
