Parents: Try Free Summer Bowling Programs

Hey moms and dads, here’s a fun and free activity to occupy your kids this summer: many local bowling alleys are offering free bowling programs for kids. When I found this had continued into this summer (we participated a few years ago), I immediately signed my boys up.

This can be especially useful on a rainy day, or when it’s actually too hot to go to the pool. I find, there are few activities that the entire family can enjoy—not everyone likes the same movies or can agree on what museum or amusement park to attend. But at least in my household, bowling always seems to please my whole family. Even my 2-year-old enjoys it.

The programs also offer parents the ability to join in on the action by either paying per game, or purchasing a summer pass–less than $30 for up to four adults for the entire summer.

AMF lanes, which includes Country Club Lanes in Middle River, are part of the Summer Unplugged program, while come other bowling alleys participate in the Kids Bowl Free program.  And finally, offers the Student Ball pass.

Basically, you chose your favorite alley, sign up your children, then you get coupons emailed to you each week. It’s a great way to have an inexpensive , and much less expensive than a trip to a museum, movies, or the zoo.

You still have to pay for bowling shoes, but your kids get up to two free games, every day all summer long. I’m even on a hunt for cheap bowling shoes on eBay, to even further minimize the cost of our outings.

We’ve already been twice this year, and for less than $10 (the cost of two pairs of shoes). My kids have had hours of fun bowling already. I’m a huge fan of duckpins, especially since my kids are ages 5 and 2, but depending on which bowling alley you chose, you can decide between 10-pin or duckpin bowling.
