18 Dogs Homed After Shelter Hits 'Critical Capacity': Report

Several dogs found permanent homes over the weekend after the Montgomery County animal shelter surpassed its max capacity, a report said.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center revealed it was able to home multiple dogs over the weekend after reaching a "critical capacity" level, according to WTOP News.

Maria Anselmo, a spokesperson for the shelter, told the outlet that 18 dogs found their forever homes by Sunday, with two pending adoptions. Six others were placed in foster homes.

The development comes days after the animal shelter announced Friday that it was in desperate need of adopters or fosters for large dogs.

The shelter said at the time that it had seen a surge in dog drop-offs, having taken in 29 dogs between March 4 and 6. The intake sent the shelter's population to over 100 dogs, and struggling to find kennel space.

Officials had specifically called on the community to help find homes for its large dog intakes, explaining that "bigger dogs often wait the longest for homes."

Anselmo told WTOP that it hopes the momentum of adoptions and fosters continues so the shelter can get to at least 75 dogs. "As of this moment, there are 79 dogs in shelter and 27 dogs in foster," she said.

Throughout the week, except Wednesdays, the shelter is open from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, interested adopters can visit between 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The shelter, which is closed on Wednesday, is located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood.
