$1M Winning Powerball Ticket Sold In Gaithersburg

GAITHERSBURG, MD – While Wednesday's $758 million Powerball drawing was snagged by a player in Massachusetts, Maryland Lottery officials say the state does have a $1 million winner – one of 34 across the country. The $1 million-winning ticket was sold at Potomac Shell, 12140 Darnestown Road in Gaithersburg. The winning Powerball numbers for Wednesday, Aug. 23, were: 6-7-16-23-26, plus the Powerball of 04.

Lottery officials urge the winner to sign the back of the ticket and keep it in a safe location until he or she can come to Lottery headquarters at 1800 Washington Boulevard in Baltimore to claim the prize. The winner must claim within 182 days of the drawing date.

Wednesday's drawing also produced two $50,000 winners in Maryland. Overall, there were 201,079 winning tickets sold in Maryland for last night's Powerball drawing, with prizes ranging from $4 to the $1 million winner sold in Montgomery County. The jackpot of $758.7 million is the largest grand prize won by a single ticket in U.S. lottery history. The winner can choose to accept the prize as an annuity paid over 29 years, or take a lump sum of $480.5 million (before taxes). It was the second-largest jackpot in history, topped only by the $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot in January of 2016, which was shared by three winners in Florida, Tennessee and California.

In addition to the $1 million winner here in Maryland, there were another 33 winning tickets worth $1 million sold in 18 states, including Virginia.

Players in Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and the Virgin Islands matched the five white balls and also added the Power Play option on their tickets, which doubled their prizes to $2 million. The base price of a Powerball ticket is $2. The Power Play option adds $1 to the cost of the ticket and will multiply any prizes other than the jackpot. Powerball tickets are sold in 47 states and jurisdictions.

Since its inception in 1973, Maryland Lottery and Gaming has awarded more than $24.4 billion in prizes to Lottery players and more than $15 billion in Lottery revenue to the State of Maryland, according to a news release.
