Best Medicine Rep Presents NEW PLAYS/NEW VOICES

Gaithersburg theater to perform 4 plays by MCPS students

Best Medicine Rep, Gaithersburgโ€™s professional theater company, is proud to present New Plays/New Voices, an evening of short plays written by Montgomery County Public School students. The plays will be performed by professional actors on Monday 24 April 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo Park. The plays were written during residencies with playwright John Morogiello through Arts in Education Grants from the Maryland State Arts Council.

โ€œIโ€™ve been dying to present an evening like this ever since we founded the company,โ€ says Best Medicine Repโ€™s artistic director John Morogiello, โ€œKids look at the world in a uniquely wonderful way that is simultaneously serious and hilarious. Itโ€™s what our company is all about.โ€

The four selected scripts are: Races with Buffalo by Alice Byrneโ€™s fourth graders at Dr. Charles R. Drew Elementary School in Silver Spring, The Third Floor Bedroom by Dana Whitmanโ€™s fifth grade class at Potomac Elementary School, and two plays from Chevy Chase Elementary School fifth graders: Agent 355 by Josephine Lusterโ€™s class and Baron Von Steuben by Theresa M. Friisโ€™ class.

A Teaching Artist for two decades, Morogiello found it difficult to narrow the evening to four scripts. โ€œOver the course of the year I teach in nine schools for the Maryland State Arts Council, so weโ€™re talking at least thirty-six different scripts. The students work tremendously hard on them and theyโ€™re wonderfully entertaining; itโ€™s a shame that the plays disappear once the residency ends. We hope this evening serves as a celebration, and a continuance, of the joy we generate in the classroom.โ€

Performing in the plays will be Adam R. Adkins, Jamaly Allen, Terence Aselford, Rebecca A. Herron, Nayab Hussain, Deborah Lubega, Melissa B. Robinson, and Vashti Sadjedy.
