Critters for the Cure 5K Recap

On Saturday, my dog and I participated in the Critters for the Cure 5K. It was a great event held in our neighborhood to raise money for women battling cancer in our local community.

We did it! After very little training and in DC's hot and humid weather, Reddick and I completed our first 5K together. It was such a great event and I hope that Critters for the Cure continues to hold the 5K every year.

The race started at the Fleet Feet store in the Kentlands. The race was sponsored not only by Fleet Feet but also by Bark!, the Montgomery County Animal Hospital and a few other local businesses. Registration ran pretty smoothly because the participant list wasn't overly huge. I think there was about 50 people participating plus a few people who registered on race day. The race was not really a "race" but a fun run with no timers, prizes and pressure - just how we like it.

The morning was hot and I was very happy that the store opened it's doors to the pups so that they could enjoy the air conditioning while waiting and after the race. There was plenty of water and treats for both the owners and the dogs. There were dogs of all shapes and sizes and Reddick was in heaven. He loves being around other dogs and  especially people.

The run started and Reddick and I were at the front of the pack! Reddick likes to start our runs at a dead sprint. Someday he'll learn that's really not the way to do it. There were lots of breaks and a little walking, but we got through the race in great shape. I love running through the Kentlands and seeing people out getting their paper, looking at the beautiful houses and just being in such a friendly community. Everyone was wondering what we were running for and were immediately interested.

Reddick and I were among the first few runners to finish! I was really excited for him. I'm not really a fast runner and I know Reddick is helping me with my pace. Once we finished we had some water and treats and waited for the rest of the runners and walkers to come in. We were able to mingle with some of the sponsors and other community members. Reddick became friends pretty quickly with the sponsors because they  seem to have a bottomless fist full of treats. There were lots of great raffles prizes for the participants. Reddick and I came home with a new shirt, a New Balance hat and plenty of treats.

For being the first 5K for Critters for the Cure, I think it was extremely successful. I can only hope that the event grows bigger in the future and it can become one of the popular 5Ks held in the Kentlands. I had been looking for a race that Reddick could run in with me and this was the perfect way to kick off our race career together!
