Gaithersburg Duo Named To All-State Team

Billy Brown and Simba Gwashavanhu earn honors as the season draws to a close.

The high school career of Gaithersburg seniors Billy Brown and Simba Gwashavanhu came to an official ending in the fourth annual Maryland Crab Bowl at Bowie State University last weekend but the dynamic duo earned postseason honors Thursday when the All-State team was announced.

Brown was named to the first team offense and Gwashavanhu earned a spot on the second team defense. Brown was also named to the consensus all-state team as one of the top 30 vote-getters through the selection process.

Both players were on the winning side in Washington’s 14-6 Crab Bowl victory over the Baltimore team that gave Washington a 3-1 advantage in the series.

“I feel honored to have the opportunity to showcase Gaithersburg [in the Crab Bowl],” Brown said afterward. “I’m just happy to be here.”

Brown, a two-way standout, earned a spot on the Crab Bowl roster after a dynamic senior campaign that saw the 6-foot-5 wide receiver register over 900 yards receiving and score 13 touchdowns while recording 20 sacks from his defensive end position.

“There is nobody better,” Gaithersburg head coach Kreg Kephart said about Brown, “He’s the Most Valuable Player in the county I don’t care what anybody says.”

Brown’s performance this season also helped him earn first team All-Met honors from The Washington Post.

“I feel special,” said Brown. “I feel like one of the best.”

Brown is still undecided on his college plans but has drawn interest from both Shepherd and Bowie State and is also considering Lackawanna, a junior college in Pennsylvania.

“That could be the route, too,” said Brown.

Meanwhile, Gwashavanhu, a Delaware recruit, said he looks forward to embarking on a collegiate career.

“I might redshirt, definitely,” said Gwashavanhu, who toiled as a wide receiver and defensive back for the Trojans this season, “but I just can’t wait to get up there to meet my new teammates and my new coaches.”
