Lucky Dog 5K Canceled Due To Low Registration, Says City Official

The Lucky Dog 5K has been canceled due to low registration numbers, a Gaithersburg city official tells Patch. Refunds will be issued.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Next month's inaugural Lucky Dog 5K has been canceled due to low registration numbers, a Gaithersburg city official tells Patch.

"We're really sad that this happened," Carolyn Muller — Gaithersburg's acting director of Parks, Recreation and Culture — said in an interview Tuesday afternoon.

Hosted by the City of Gaithersburg, the Lucky Dog 5K event was set to take place on Sunday, March 15 at 8:30 a.m. Participants were allowed to run the race with their canine companion.

Because of low registration numbers, Muller said it wasn't worth tying up law enforcement, animals services, and public works officials for the event.

"We feel our resources can be better used to bring some of our events that are well-known and very popular, like Paws in the Park or La Milla de Mayo," Muller said.

According to city officials, a portion of the proceeds were going to the Dolores C. Swoyer Camp Scholarship fund, which provides financial support to Gaithersburg families so kids can go to summer camp.

In a press release, city officials said they will be issuing refunds. It may take a couple of days for refunds to show up on people's accounts.

Those who made a separate donation to the Dolores C. Swoyer Scholarship Fund and want a refund can email parksrec@gaithersburgmd.gov.
