Massive MoCo Barn Fire Causes $300K In Damages: MCFRS

An investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine what caused the barn fire in Laytonsville early Monday.

LAYTONSVILLE, MD — A large barn fire in the Laytonsville area amounted to some $300,000 in damages early Monday, according to authorities.

The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service said the fire broke out around 2 a.m. near the 22300 block of Laytonsville Road, near Griffith Road.

No injuries were reported at the scene as around 75 firefighters worked to extinguish the flames. The barn, which housed hay bales and farm equipment, was ruled a complete loss after it collapsed.

MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer said the cause of the fire remains unknown, although investigators are weighing a spontaneous combustion explanation.

Battling the fire proved challenging for first responders as there were no hydrants in the immediate area.
