MTV Turns 30

VH1 celebrated with a three day marathon of footage from the 80s.

MTV, the channel dedicated to music (at first), blipped onto our television screens 30 years ago today.

Rolling Stone magazine took a look back at some of the early days of the network, which now includes several channels dedicated to various genre's of music—and non-music—programming.

The music industry was in a slump when MTV began picking up steam, Mark Goodman, one of the original VJs, told the magazine.

"We came along just in time and revitalized things, or at least opened people up to more music," he said.

VH1 Classic, a division of VH1, MTV's sister channel launched in 1985 to target a slightly older demographic, aired a three day tribute to MTV by playing music videos from the 80s.
