On the Agenda

The Mayor and Council will discuss the Gaithersburg High School modernization project.

Officials from Montgomery County Public Schools will provide an update on the modernization of Gaithersburg High School tonight.

The update is the only item on the City Council's work session agenda.

The project on the 40.5 acre site would include two phases of construction as the old building—save for the auditorium and the J wing, built in 1973 and 2005 respectively—is demolished.

The original building was completed in 1951 and tennis and basketball courts and a new student parking lot will take its place.

The new building will go on the current student parking lot site.

Today at 1:30 the County Council's Education Committee will discuss the $8 million special appropriations bill that would help pay for the modernization.

The new building aims to be LEED Silver certified or higher, according to City staff, and a capacity with 2,294 students, with a core capacity of 2,400.

According to Montgomery County Public Schools, GHS currently has slightly more than 2,000 students.
