Search to Resume in Morning for Potomac River Swimmer

Montgomery County rescue officials say a man jumped off a cliff into the river Wednesday and never came back up.

The search to find a man missing since he jumped into the Potomac River has wrapped up for the night and will resume Thursday morning, say Montgomery County officials.

Two swimmer in their 20s, swimmers entered the river from the Virginia shoreline near Sandy Landing, says Pete Piringer, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services spokesman. One man came out of the river, while the other has been missing since early afternoon.

Montgomery County authorities were called to the area just south of Great Falls about 2:15 p.m.

The duo may have jumped from cliffs into the river, Piringer said. Nearby kayakers tried to help find the missing swimmer without success.

Rescue boats from Maryland and Virginia searched the river extensively, with a ground search along the shoreline starting in late afternoon.

Piringer said people are not allowed into that section of the river unless they are in a boat.
