Sophomore Sensation Emerges for Trojans

Solomon Vault leads the county in rushing.

Only a sophomore, Gaithersburg running back and defensive back Solomon Vault has already become a fixture on the Trojans’ varsity squad this season.

Vault was an integral part of the Trojans as a freshman, helping lead them to the region final last year. This season, however, the 5-foot-10, 165-pound dynamo has a year of experience under his belt and he’s been a shining star on the gridiron.

The Trojans find themselves at 2-0 heading into this weekend’s matchup with Sherwood thanks largely to the efforts of Vault who may be small in stature but is putting up some big numbers this year.

Not only is he among the area’s leading rushers but he’s also the top public school ground-gainer in Montgomery County.

Vault rushed for 223 yards on 21 carries and scored two touchdowns in Gaithersburg’s 35-14 victory over Richard Montgomery in the season opener. He followed up that performance with a 91-yard rushing effort in a 9-0 victory over Springbrook last week. He also caught four passes for 40 yards against the Blue Devils.

“Solomon did a good job,” Gaithersburg head coach Kreg Kephart said following the win over Springbrook. “I’m very impressed with him.”

As a special teams kick returner, Vault should be considered a threat to go the distance once he touches the ball. He returned a kick 31 yards against Springbrook.

“Obviously, he’s a good player,” said Springbrook head coach Rob Wendel.

Vault paid homage to his offensive linemen for opening the holes that he runs through, rattling off the names of Trevor Davis, Umar Tunkara, Brian Houk, Daquan Cook, Arsome Mazhari and Brian Cabrera.

“I don’t do anything without them so I give them all the credit in the world,” said Vault.
