VIDEO: Renovated Skate Park Ramps Up for Summer

Capacity crowds came out Friday to test the City skate park's new features.

The renovations to Gaithersburg's were well-received on Friday when the facility reopened to a capacity crowd of boarders and bladers.

Recreation Program Manager Maura Dinwiddie said if many more people came out to try the resurfaced and revamped facility, it would have become a safety hazard.

But warm, clear weather persisted and the park reopening went smoothly.

The asphalt was painted over to give a smoother, faster rolling surface, Dinwiddie said. Other improvements included a new stationary rail, a wall-ride and a rebuilt escalator ramp.

The park is designed to be used by skateboarders, roller bladers and BMX bikers. But skateboarders were nearly the exclusive users on Friday.
